Happy Chinese New Year.

With the return of the Brazil Village (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nq16KFzr90o) on January 22 and the Guatemala Summer Camp (www.singitsummercamp.blogspot.com -can you pick out our delegation?) on January 18 we are all back from the 2011 Programming.  We are looking forward to hearing how it all went. We will also be interested in hearing how Ottawa’s Winter Camp went from Nicole Parks.

This success is directly related to our fundraising -as we look to support our National Fees, Local projects and programs, our Financial Assistance Fund, and this year we are hosting a Summer Camp.  All of which takes time, dedication and commitment are your part to educating and inspiring action for a more just and peaceful world
We had another successful Cheese Campaign. Thanks you, Kari and Peter, for spearheading the venture this year.  Volunteering at the Kinsmen Center on Bingo Night brings affords us free services that we would otherwise have to pay. There are still some Sunday evenings to be filled. Thank you, Donna, for maintaining the schedule for this.

Thanks you everyone who made this happen and who supported it.

For our next fundraiser, we have secured the March 10th weekend at 3 ANBL outlets - Oromocto, Devon and York. We have found someone to co-ordinate the scheduling. What we need now is bodies. More on this in the next few days.

Going along with this, we are looking for a design for a bookmarker of sorts that can be handed out such as this or this.If you have a design sent it along.

CISV-National has given each Chapter $100 as seed money towards a new fundraiser. Rules include it must be a joint Junior Board/Adult boards and it must be a new project. Prizes will be awarded. J Any Ideas? See the Trustee Fundraiser Challenge here:  http://goo.gl/WUnyU

We are well into the 2012 program planning. In fact we are rapidly approaching Deadlines for filling delegations. We are still seeking youth delegates and leaders for programs and Staff for our Summer Camp. Talk it up. Anyone interested contact us. Anyone you think might be interested, forward their name and contact information.

The International Relations Office at UNB Fredericton cordially invites you to two presentations by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada on Wednesday, January 25th:

Lunch and Learn: Increasing Prosperity & Promoting Canadian Values in Asia
The Canadian government's soon-to-be released Foreign Policy Plan suggests that increasing prosperity and promoting Canadian values -democracy, human rights and religious freedoms- will be a major focus of Canada's short-term international engagement. In addition, Ottawa has signaled its intentions to devote more attention to Asia, specifically China and Southeast Asia. On the one hand, this invigorated engagement of Asia has the potential to create new trade opportunities for Canadians, as well as to raise Canada's diplomatic profile in the region. On the other hand, promoting Canadian values, as well as the intersection of values and business, create complications for companies and organizations operating on the ground in Asia. This session will present some examples of challenges faced by Canadian companies, NGOs and government offices. Bring your lunch and join us! This event will take place on Wed. Jan. 25th from 12:00-1:15 pm in the Student Union Building, Room 103.

Evening session: Emerging Voices On Asia: What's Canada's Role?
The rise of Asia is real, it is staggering in its scope and pace, and it is happening in ways that most of us are only beginning to appreciate. This session will provide examples of the rise of -and changes within- Asia, ranging from the long-term and profound to the more entertaining and light-hearted. It will also present some results from the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada's (APF Canada) 2011 National Opinion Poll, which gives some indication of how Canadians are feeling about the rise of Asia.

Finally, it will introduce a new APF Canada initiative - the National Conversation on Asia - which is aimed at bridging the gap between the reality of an increasingly Asia-centred world, and Canadians' comfort level with this important global shift. This event will take place on Wed. Jan.25th from 7:00-8:30 pm in MacLaggan Hall, Room 53.

Thurs Jan 26that 7:00 pm Marshall d’Avray Hall, Room 261, 10 MacKay Dr., UNB

I’m Stuck! “Social Justice” and other Labels that Shape our World

This inaugural Dr. Ottilia Chareka Memorial Lecture on Education and Social Justice will explore the concept of labels and argue that we need to move from labelling to acting if “social justice” is going to have any meaning and relevance at all.

Presenter – Dr. Carla Peck, University of Alberta

What labels do you use to organize the world, and the people in it? What labels do you carry with you when you walk into a classroom? What labels do you wear proudly, and which do you hide behind, or use to harm? Labels have the power to name privilege and injustice but they can also be destructive and can prevent us from taking the action needed to bring about social change. The two labels Ottilia wore proudly – Mother and later, Doctor of Philosophy – were labels she earned and cherished. Other labels, such as critical scholar or feminist, she did not wear, she lived.

Dr. Carla Peck lives many labels: Auntie, sister and friend, among others. In addition to being Ottilia’s sister-friend, Carla is Assistant Professor of Social Studies Education in the Department of Elementary Education at the University of Alberta. Carla’s research interests include students’ understandings of democratic concepts, diversity, identity, citizenship and the relationship between students’ ethnic identities and their understandings of history.
